The air is starting to cool, the PSLs are ready for consumption (that’s pumpkin spice lattes to the uninitiated), and school is back in session. The sad reality is: summer is over. Is there anything more depressing? What is it about summer that makes it so special? If you live in a cold climate, the warm days are of course the main draw. Shorts, shades, and long days, but also the feeling of endless possibilities. There is a magic to summer that no other season can ever achieve.
For me, summer means long, endless days on the beach. Swimming, lounging, and relaxing in a way that makes you feel that nothing else in the world matters. So let’s rewind to before the dreaded Labor Day (the unofficial end of summer) and go back to the beach.
If you know me, you know I love the beach. Not necessarily the beach actually, but the ocean. I love being near it, watching the waves, smelling the salt water, and of course, just being in it. I like to say that I was born on the beach, which in a way I was. I spent the first four years of my life in a city by the ocean in Northern Italy called Marina di Carrara. My summer days were spent at the beach playing in the sand and swimming in the Mediterranean. It was my first playground.
The sun sets after another summer beach day in Marina di Carrara
When I moved to the states I transitioned to the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean, spending days on the beaches of Cape Cod and the north shore of Massachusetts.
A perfect day at Kalmus Beach in Hyannis, Cape Cod, MA. Summer 2016
For the past ten years I’ve been beaching in Southern California, the land of endless beaches, while also traveling to various beaches around the world.
Though my beach days don’t necessarily have to end, neither do yours. It’s warm somewhere in the world and the ocean is calling. Need more inspiration? Grab a PSL and peruse some of my favorite beach spots below, then let me know in the comments your favorite places to beach.
